We are thinking somewhat about this extravagant embrace of the bride…the archetype and the deep emotion that the image contains.
We find it both interesting and disturbing that the ‘bride’ is such public property. No-one feels strange approaching, photographing commenting and responding.
The bride stripped bare of the person becomes a semiotic image available for all manner of signfications depending on the viewer… Virgin, saved, sacrificed … Hopeful, hopeless and husbaned. Owned.
Anastasia’s willful single-ness in a dress with all the trappings and none of the intent throws the whole symbolism into a chaos and sends it back to Venice…bride to the sea…the eternal virgin, watery place in which the bride is a tautological, reflexive gesture amid the tourism husbandry of the contemporary commerce city.
