Ubermarionette now showing at ACCA Pop-Up

Nick Chilvers has taken over the rusty shipping container for the second week of the ACCA Pop-Up, and has created a theatrical space inside.

Walking across the gravel towards the container, I can hear a voice singing out to me, “I want to break free from your lies. You’re so self-satisfied I don’t need you. I’ve got to break free”.

Does anyone mind if I sing along?

Nick’s video serenade to a hand puppet provides an intimate musical soundtrack for the exhibition. It captures a private moment between the performer and his prop, showing a vulnerability that is otherwise masked by costume and pose. I laugh but at the same time feel an inexplicable sadness…

The container is filled with photographic panels that Nick uses as props in his performances. The images are stills of his clowning and reflect the innate drama of life and the human experience.

This is one to watch. Showing 11.30am – 2.30pm daily until Sunday. ACCA front-yard.
